Arriving late at night
Station-area hotels remove the need for a vehicle at midnight.
Location
Puri has an airport that is far away and a railway station in the middle of town. That single fact drives most arrival decisions.
In detail
Puri is one of the easier places in India to reach by train, and considerably harder by air. Biju Patnaik International is in Bhubaneswar, over an hour away by road. So most independent travellers arrive on the railway, at Puri station, in the middle of the old town — and that is worth thinking about before booking.
Hotels within a few hundred metres of Puri station exist, and for a traveller arriving late, leaving early for a train, or visiting for a day and needing no car at all, that is genuinely convenient. You can walk to the bus stand, the market and the temple area, and the food in that part of town is the most immediately available in Puri.
The beachfront properties are north and south of the town, and Hotel Sonar Bangla is on New Marine Drive Road at Baliapanda in the northern stretch. The trade is real: you pay for the sand and the quiet, and you need a vehicle to reach the station or the temple. For most people staying more than one night, that trade is worth making once.
Station area if you are on a tight schedule, arriving after dark, or visiting for a day. Beachfront if you have two nights or more and want the coast to be part of the stay rather than a destination you travel to. Most people who plan Puri properly end up doing the temple and the beach on both days, which favours the beachfront base.
The arrival question that matters. Whatever you book, ask how you will get from the station or stand to the hotel. If the answer is "we will send a car", the distance stops being the problem. The travel desk arranges pickups, and it costs less than finding a taxi yourself with luggage at night.
