Full-day trip from Puri · Nature & birdlife

Chilka is the largest saltwater lake in Asia and a popular destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. It offers a rare experience to witness the beauty of nature and the diversity of wildlife. Visitors can take a boat ride on the lake and explore its many islands, which are home to a variety of birds, animals, and marine life. The lake is also famous for its friendly Irrawaddy dolphins, and it is an excellent place for water sports and fresh seafood.

How to plan the day

  • Boats depart from designated points around the lake — Satapada is the common gateway reached from Puri for dolphin sightings.
  • Start early: dolphins are most active in the morning calm, and afternoons can turn breezy.
  • Winter months (roughly November–February) bring the migrant bird season; summer brings clearer water but hotter decks.
  • Agree boat duration and route before boarding, and confirm life jackets for everyone.
  • Seafood at the lakeside stalls is the closing ritual — order what was caught that morning.

Verify before you go — boat timings, permit fees and dolphin-sighting zones are managed locally and change with seasons. The hotel travel desk confirms current details the night before.

Making a day of it

How to spend the day

Chilika is large enough that the route matters more than the destination. Decide which jetty you are heading for before you set out — the drive differs substantially.

  1. Early

    Leave the hotel

Boat trips are best in the morning, when the water is calmer and the birds are active.

  2. Mid-morning

    Boat on the lagoon

Most trips run an hour or two. Dolphins are the draw, but the scale of the water is what stays with people.

  3. Midday

    Lunch on shore

Simple seafood and Odia cooking near the jetties — the lagoon's crab and prawns are a local speciality.

  4. Afternoon

    Bird island and the return

In winter the migratory bird numbers are extraordinary. Then the drive back, arriving before dark.

Book through the travel desk. Boat operators, jetty choice and seasonality all matter here. Tell the desk what you want to see and they will tell you honestly whether the timing works.
