October to February is the honest answer
cool mornings, warm noons, a lively but manageable town
Every season changes the town — the sea, the crowds, the light. Here's the honest version of each.

The one-paragraph answer
Most travellers should aim for October to February: warm days, cool evenings, calm seas and the festival energy that peaks around the year's end. March to June is for heat-tolerant travellers who want emptier beaches and lower rates — the day simply moves indoors until late afternoon. July to September is monsoon: dramatic, green and genuinely atmospheric, but swimming is usually off and some drives slow down. There is no bad month, only a mismatched one.
Clear skies, gentle surf, migrant birds on the Chilka wetlands and comfortable temple visits. This is also the busiest stretch, so book sea-facing categories early — the Platinum Double and Platinum Twin go first. Early mornings on the beach can be genuinely cool; pack one warm layer.
Heat builds steadily through April and May. The strategy is an early-morning beach, a shaded midday, and outings from four o'clock onwards. Temple visits work best at opening; the Konark stone is unforgiving by noon. The reward: quiet sands, low-season rates and long golden evenings.
The Bay of Bengal puts on its show — heavy skies, big surf, and the Marine Drive at its most cinematic. Swimming is typically unsafe and off-limits; boat operations on Chilka pause in rough spells. For travellers happy to trade beach time for atmosphere, it's a beautiful, quiet season. Watch cyclone advisories if travelling late in the season.
| Season | Months | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | Oct–Feb | First visits, families, festivals | Crowds; book early |
| Summer | Mar–Jun | Quiet beaches, lower rates | Midday heat |
| Monsoon | Jul–Sep | Atmosphere, green drives | No swimming; rough seas |
Festivals — Rath Yatra (mid-year, lunar calendar) and the winter festival season are Puri at full volume. Dates shift annually; verify before booking travel around them.
A year on this coast
Cool, dry and clear, with the sea at its calmest and the light at its best. It is also the busiest and most expensive window, and the one to book furthest ahead.
Still comfortable, considerably quieter than winter, and a good compromise if you can travel outside school holidays.
High humidity and strong sun. If you plan around mornings and evenings, the trade is a very quiet coast for a much lower rate.
Heavy rain, rough seas and a coastline that is genuinely beautiful in a different register. Beach time is unreliable and swimming is out of the question. Some guests come specifically for it.
The rain clears, the sea settles and the crowds have not yet arrived. Many staff will tell you this is their favourite month.
Festival caution. Around Rath Yatra the town fills to capacity, roads close and transport becomes difficult. Dates follow the lunar calendar and shift every year — verify before you commit to travel in that window.
Keep planning
For most visitors, a winter month between November and February. If you want the same weather without the crowds, October is the insider answer.
It depends what you came for. Beach holidays are unreliable and swimming is unsafe, but the coast is dramatic, rates are lower and the town is calm.
Only if you dislike crowds or need easy transport. For many people it is the experience of a lifetime — but book far ahead and expect closed roads around the temples.
Before you book
cool mornings, warm noons, a lively but manageable town
empty beaches and Ratha Jatra's cousin festivals, if you accept wet afternoons
heat out of the way by 10am, sea breeze after, and the lowest rates of the year
