Why it matters

One of the longest beaches on India's east coast

Puri's beach runs for kilometres, and it is genuinely a working shore rather than a resort strip: fishing boats, pilgrims, cricket games at dusk and a horizon with nothing on it. Our stretch at Baliapanda is the residential end — quieter, and in our view the better half.

Sunrise

Puri faces east, so the sun comes out of the water. This is the beach's best hour and the reason to set an alarm at least once.

Late afternoon

The light softens, the heat breaks and the beach fills with local families. The most sociable part of the day.

Walking

Walk north or south along the sand for as long as you like; there is no shortage of beach in either direction.

Birdlife and boats

Fishing craft come and go through the day, and the shoreline attracts birds. Bring binoculars if you have them.

At the hotel's doorstep · Direct coastal access

Step outside and feel the sand beneath your feet — take leisurely walks along the shore, or simply soak in uninterrupted ocean views, as the sea is always just a few steps away. This stretch of the Bay of Bengal has its own rhythm: fishermen hauling boats at dawn, families flying kites as the afternoon cools, and evening crowds gathered where the waves catch the last light.

Best times on the sand

  • Dawn — coolest hours, empty beach, fishing boats returning. Ask the travel desk for local sunrise times.
  • Early evening — the golden-hour hour: from the Sundowner terrace, the beach performs below.
  • Avoid midday sun, especially March–June; the sand reflects as much heat as the sky gives.

Swimming and safety

  • Swim only where lifeguard flags permit, and never alone at dawn or dusk.
  • Currents along the Bay of Bengal can be strong; supervise children closely.
  • During monsoon, stay out of the water entirely during rough-sea warnings.

Before you swim

The sea here deserves respect

The Bay of Bengal on the Odisha coast has powerful surf, significant undertow and steep drops close to shore. This is not a gently shelving swimming beach, and conditions change with the tide and the season.

  • Watch the current
  • Do not swim alone
  • Supervise children closely
  • Ask locally about conditions
  • Never swim alone, and never at night or after dark. Lifeguard coverage is not guaranteed along the whole stretch.
  • Watch before you enter. Five minutes observing where the surf breaks and how the water pulls back tells you more than any sign.
  • Children need an adult in the water with them, not watching from the sand. The drop-off can be sudden.
  • Ask the front desk. Our team sees this water every day and will tell you honestly whether conditions are suitable that morning.

The safest plan — treat the beach as a place to walk, sit and watch rather than a swimming destination, and take the paddling to a shallower stretch if the sea is running high.

Making a day of it

From sunrise to afterglow

  1. Sunrise

    Out of the water

The sun rises directly out of the sea. Walk twenty minutes north for the emptiest stretch.

  2. Morning

    Breakfast, then shade

Back to the hotel for the restaurant's breakfast. Mid-morning sun on this coast is unforgiving.

  3. Afternoon

    The town

Use the hottest hours for the temple or the bazaar, and come back to the sand later.

  4. Late afternoon

    Second walk

The beach's best light and its liveliest hour. Cricket, kites and fishing boats returning.

  5. Evening

    Sundowner

Up to the terrace for the afterglow and something cold. See Sundowner Cafe.
