Along the Puri–Konark Marine Drive · Nature
Balukhand is a natural reserve situated along the Puri–Konark marine drive, covering approximately 87 sq. km. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including spotted deer, Indian pangolin, jungle cat, wild boar, and several species of birds. It also hosts rare and endangered plant species, including Casuarina, Sal, and Eucalyptus. The landscape mixes pristine beaches, dunes and lagoons — and because it straddles the road to Konark, most guests pass through it without realising it is a protected sanctuary.
Visiting sensibly
- Early morning or late afternoon give the best light and the best chance of spotting deer at the forest edge.
- There are trekking and nature trails; check locally which sections are open, as access rules vary.
- Stay on the tracks, keep noise down, and never feed wildlife.
- Combine naturally with a Konark run — the sanctuary lines the whole route.
A compact morning — drive the Marine Drive at dawn, stop at the sanctuary edges, then continue to Konark before the heat. The 3-day itinerary sequences it exactly this way.
