Rooftop terrace with outdoor seating and a view of the sea at Hotel Sonar Bangla, Puri

Sundowner Cafe

The terrace where Puri's evenings slow down — snacks, beverages and a front-row sky.

Terrace level · Sea-facing

The Sundowner Cafe provides a calm and inviting environment for guests to enjoy a selection of snacks, beverages, and casual refreshments. Whether you are catching up with friends or simply taking a moment for yourself, our cafe in Puri offers a peaceful retreat within the hotel. Its serene ambience makes it the perfect spot to pause, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of a leisurely meal or beverage.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the terrace becomes the hotel's quiet theatre: woven chairs, potted greenery, and the golden hues of the ocean painting the sky — an experience made truly special by our enviable Marine Drive address.

The terrace experience

  • Sea-facing terrace seating with coastal breeze
  • Snacks, beverages and casual refreshments
  • Grey-blue armchairs, artwork and an airy, modern feel indoors
  • A short stair-free route from the beachside rooms

Golden hour varies by season — our beach guide notes when the light is at its best through the year.

Why the terrace works

Above the water at the best hour

The cafe sits above the beach with an outdoor view along the coast. It serves snacks and beverages rather than a full menu, which is exactly right — this is a place to sit, not a restaurant to get through.

Golden hour

The terrace catches the last hour of light. It is the single best hour to be at this hotel, and the reason people come back to this page.

Above the sand

An elevated view of the beach and the water — close enough to hear the surf, high enough to see along the coast.

Evening wind

The sea breeze makes the terrace several degrees cooler than the street. Worth knowing in the warm months.

No dress code

Come up straight from the beach. It is a cafe, not a restaurant.

One honest note. Puri faces east, so you will not see the sun drop into the sea from here — you will see the sky and the water change colour after it has gone. Our Journal piece explains where the actual sunsets are.

Reserving the terrace

The cafe takes reservations directly on its own line. For a weekend sunset, or a group of more than four, calling ahead is worth the minute it takes.

Staying with us? Ask the front desk to note a terrace preference when you check in. It is a small request and they will do what they can to honour it.

Before you go up

The short version

The terrace is the point

outdoor seating with a clear line to the sea, best from late afternoon

Snacks and beverages, not a full menu

the kitchen keeps it simple: fritters, sandwiches, chai and cold drinks

Golden hour fills up

guests drift up an hour before sunset, so the corner armchairs go first

The terrace in detail

Surfboards, high tables and the last of the light

Two details decide whether you will like the Sundowner: the wall of surfboards behind the high tables, and how much sea you can see from the seat you get.

Golden hour

Stay the night, stay for the light
