The Gundicha Temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath. It is surrounded by lush greenery and is known for its stunning architecture and intricate carvings. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Jagannath visits the Gundicha Temple every year during the annual Rath Yatra festival, which attracts a large number of devotees from all over the world. Visitors can witness the aarti and darshan, where they can see the deity up close and offer their prayers. The temple also has a beautiful garden and a pond, where visitors can relax and enjoy the tranquil environment.

Visitor notes

  • Outside the Rath Yatra window the temple is notably quieter than the main Jagannath Temple — a good contrast visit.
  • Dress modestly and observe the same entry customs as at the main temple.
  • The garden and pond make it a restful pause between town sights.
  • Rath Yatra dates follow the lunar calendar and change each year — verify before planning around the festival.

Temple-hopping day? Pair Gundicha with the Shree Jagannath Temple; both are covered in the Puri temple guide.

Rath Yatra

Why Gundicha matters most in summer

For most of the year this is a quiet temple at the north end of town. During Rath Yatra it becomes the destination of the whole festival — the deities travel here from the Jagannath Temple on enormous chariots and stay for several days before returning.

  • Festival centrepiece
  • Crowds are heavy
  • Roads close
  • Dates follow the lunar calendar
  • Dates change every year. Rath Yatra follows the lunar calendar. Check the date before planning travel around it.
  • The town fills completely. Accommodation and transport book out far in advance; our reservations desk will be straight with you about what is possible.
  • Roads around the temples close to vehicles during the festival, so plan on walking part of any journey into town.
  • Outside the festival, Gundicha is a calm and quick visit that pairs naturally with the Jagannath Temple.

Visiting outside Rath Yatra? Combine it with the Jagannath Temple and the bazaar lanes in a single morning rather than making two separate trips.
