What "near Puri Beach" should actually mean
Almost every Puri listing uses the phrase "near the beach", and on this coast the phrase covers everything from a room you can walk onto the sand from to one that needs an auto ride through traffic. That distinction matters more than a star rating, so it is worth checking three things before you book.
One: on the sand, or across a road?
Hotel Sonar Bangla is built on the beachfront side of New Marine Drive Road, at Baliapanda in the north of Puri. Guests reach the sand from the property itself, without crossing a bus route or the main beach-road traffic that gets heavy in the evening.
Two: does the room actually face the water?
Being on the beachfront and seeing the beach from your bed are different claims. Three of the eight categories are front sea-facing; the rest are side sea view or, in one case, a quiet non-view side. The sea view page sets out exactly which is which.
Three: what can you safely do at the water?
Be cautious with any hotel that sells the sea as an amenity. Puri Beach has powerful surf, genuine undertow and drop-offs close to shore, and we cannot promise lifeguard cover. There is no swimming pool here either — the facilities are a kids' play area, a gym, dining and 24-hour room service.

Why the northern stretch suits families
Baliapanda is a quieter part of the beach than the stretch nearer the market and the temple. It is long enough for a proper walk, close enough to town to reach without a car, and generally calmer in the evening than the sand opposite the main Puri hotels.

Go early, go late
The sand is at its best and quietest before nine and again after four. Midday on this coast is hot and bright, and the sea breeze disguises how strong the sun is.
Treat the water seriously
Powerful surf, genuine undertow and drop-offs close in. Swim only where flags permit, and never let a child out of arm’s reach.
Book the view you actually want
Front sea-facing and side sea view are different rooms at different rates. Say which one you want when you enquire rather than assuming it.
Ask what the rate includes
