How far is the temple?
About 3 km, roughly ten minutes by car or auto outside the busiest hours.
Pilgrimage
Millions of people come to Puri every year for the temple. This is what choosing somewhere to stay for that actually involves.
In detail
Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, and the volume of people who come for it surprises visitors who had no idea. In peak season the temple town is not merely busy; it is the single most congested part of Odisha.
Choosing where to stay for darshan is a different decision from choosing a beach hotel, and it is worth understanding the difference before you book.
Three things, in this order: a bed you can get a few hours sleep in, food available early in the morning, and a floor that is not a long staircase when you have walked for hours. That third point is why the ground-floor categories exist here. Both Deluxe Ground Floor categories avoid stairs entirely; the sea-view version faces the water, and the non-view version is the larger and quieter of the pair at 250 sq. ft.
The two commonest plans are darshan at dawn and back to the room, or darshan and then the beach. Both work from a base about 3 km from the temple, which is where Hotel Sonar Bangla sits on New Marine Drive Road. The advantage of that distance is that you can reach the temple before the worst of the crowd and return to a room with a balcony and the sound of the sea.
The disadvantage is equally real. If your plan is multiple darshan in a single day, or you want to walk back for the evening aarti, a hotel inside the temple town serves you better than we do, and we would rather say so.
Rath Yatra is the busiest fortnight of the year. Accommodation across Puri fills months ahead, the chariot route closes to traffic, and temple arrangements change because the deities are out of the sanctum for much of it. We do not publish festival dates, because the dates are lunar and change every year. Check the current calendar before fixing your travel dates.
Access rules are the temple's to set. Temple tradition restricts entry to the main sanctum for non-Hindus, and arrangements change. Ask the front desk for the current situation before you travel, rather than relying on a blog post.
What to know

Not from here. It is a short drive, not a stroll. For walk-to-darshan, stay inside the temple town instead.
Both Deluxe Ground Floor categories. The non-view one is 250 sq. ft. and the larger of the pair.
The in-house restaurant serves breakfast, and room service runs 24 hours for anything earlier.
Ask the desk when you book. It is easier to leave bags at the hotel than to carry them to the temple.
Ask the front desk or the temple authorities. We do not publish them, because they change.

Step by step
Rath Yatra changes everything, and the date moves each year on the lunar calendar.
Group sizes change the room type entirely. Call rather than guessing.
Older travellers and anyone with a long walk ahead should avoid stairs.
That is the whole trick. The difference is enormous.
Full-length clothing, no leather, footwear and belongings removed before entry.
You will have walked a long way. The beach and the terrace are right outside.
Keep planning
It depends on whether you want to walk to the temple or be near the beach. Walk-to-darshan hotels are inside the temple town. We are 3 km away on New Marine Drive, which suits couples and families who want a quiet beachfront room as well as darshan.

No. The temple authorities set them and they change, particularly during Rath Yatra. Ask the front desk when you book.
