The detail

The festival, in plain terms

Rath Yatra is a chariot festival. Three massive wooden chariots are drawn through the streets of Puri by hand, carrying the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, who are taken out of the temple and paraded before being returned. It dates back many centuries and is the single most important event in the Odisha calendar.

It is also, from a visitor's point of view, the most disruptive fortnight of the year. Understanding that in advance is most of the planning.

Why the dates move

Rath Yatra falls on the lunar calendar, usually in June or sometimes July. That means the Gregorian date changes every year, and it cannot be booked far in advance against a fixed calendar. If your travel dates must be fixed, check the festival calendar for your year before committing.

What it does to Puri

The chariot route is closed to traffic for days. The streets around the temple are packed from dawn to well after midnight. Pilgrims arrive in numbers that overwhelm the town's normal capacity, and hotels across Puri fill months ahead. The beach is unaffected, which is exactly why staying north of the temple on New Marine Drive can make a festival trip far more manageable.

What it does to the temple

Normal darshan arrangements change. The deities are out of the sanctum for much of the festival, so anyone coming primarily for darshan should check with the temple authorities about what is open and when, in advance. We cannot give you those timings and we would rather say so than invent them.

Book early, and book flexibly. Rooms in Puri during Rath Yatra are the scarcest of the year. Our own recommendation: reserve well in advance, ask the reservations desk what is realistic for your dates, and consider staying on New Marine Drive away from the temple road, where the festival is audible but not physically overwhelming.
