Puri weather: what the sky actually does, month by month

A coastline is not the same as the countryside behind it. Here is how temperature, rain, sea and crowds behave across the year in Puri.

The detail

Why the coast does not behave like Odisha inland

The single most useful thing to know about Puri's weather is that you are on a flat, exposed coast. There is no hill to cut off the monsoon and no shelter from the sea breeze, so the bay sets the conditions for the whole day: the wind that makes the air feel manageable in April also builds the surf that closes the beach to swimming in July.

That single mechanism explains most of what surprises visitors. A forecast that says "hot" tells you nothing useful. What matters is the direction and strength of the wind, and whether the sea has had a day to build.

January to March: the comfortable stretch

These are the months most people rate as Puri's best. Days are warm rather than hot, the sea is calmer than in the monsoon, and evenings on the beach are genuinely pleasant. The trade-off is that this is peak season for pilgrims, so rooms and trains are at their busiest and the temple area is busiest at dawn.

April to June: the build-up

April is the last comfortable month. From May the heat becomes serious, and by June the humidity has arrived. The sea starts to roughen through June. Late June brings Rath Yatra, which is the single busiest fortnight of the year.

July to September: the monsoon

Heavy rain, rough surf and a green landscape behind the dunes. The beach is usually unsuitable for swimming, and some days the sand is effectively off limits. This is a genuinely different Puri: quieter, cheaper, and rewarding if you came for the temple and the town rather than the water.

October to December: the return

The rain tapers through October and the humidity falls away by November. December is warm in the sun and cool after dark, with the sea starting to settle. This is the best shoulder season: good conditions, fewer people than January, and the light that photographers wait for.

The sea is the thing to plan around, not the sky. A bright day with a strong onshore wind can produce surf that makes the water dangerous while the beach itself looks perfect. Check conditions on the day, and read our beach safety guide before going in.
