The detail
Five traditions, honestly assessed
Odisha is one of India's genuine craft states, and the temptation on a trip is to buy whatever is nearest the beach. Some of it is excellent. A lot of it is not. The difference is usually whether you can find out who made it.
Pattachitra
Palash-painted cloth, usually on cotton, depicting mythological subjects with fine line work. Genuine examples are made by chitrakars in Raghurajpur and Ballipada, and the older work is extraordinary. Prices range from modest for a small scroll to serious money for a large or antique piece. Buy from the artist, not from a stall that has bought a print.
Palm-leaf etching
Scripts and scenes etched onto dried palm leaves. Small, light, genuinely traditional, and among the easiest things to carry home. Frequently sold by the artists who make them.
Appliqu and textile work
Pipili, about 20 km from Puri, is known for Chandua applique. The work is distinctive and well made, but prices in the market vary enormously with quality.
Silver filigree
Fine silver work from Taraspur and other centres. Genuine filigree is lightweight and detailed. Check the weight, and be sceptical of anything described as solid silver without a hallmark.
Stone carving
Odisha's stone carvers work in soapstone and greenstone. Small carvings are widely available and make good gifts; large pieces are heavy and are best bought in person rather than shipped.
The one rule that matters. Ask who made it and where. If the answer is vague, the price is probably also invented. A craftsman will tell you the material, the village and roughly what they charge for their own work — and that is often less than a shop near the beach will ask for the same object.
