The outlook

Front sea-facing, which means what it says

The sea occupies the whole window rather than a slice of it, and the balcony sits directly over the sand. On this coast that means the sunrise arrives in the room — Puri faces east, so the sun comes up out of the water.

Worth knowing. Private balconies are available in selected rooms, and the front desk confirms your exact view category at check-in. If the view is the whole point of the trip, say so when you book.

Is it right for you?

Who tends to book the Platinum Double

Couples

The most-booked category at the hotel, and for obvious reasons: one large bed, a balcony, and a view that does the work for you. Quiet enough in the evenings to leave the balcony door open.

A solo traveller

Comfortable for one, with the added advantage that the whole day's light is legible from inside the room. Easy walk to the beach gate whenever you want it.

A small family

Sleeps up to three. Workable for two adults and a child, though families of four will do better in the Platinum 4 Bed, which adds two double beds and a separate living room.

How the day reads

A sea-facing day, hour by hour

  1. 05:40

    Wake before the alarm

The horizon separates from the water first, then the light comes up from underneath. Tea from the in-room maker, on the balcony.

  2. 07:30

    Breakfast downstairs

The multi-cuisine restaurant opens for the day. Ten minutes' walk, then back up before the heat.

  3. 10:00

    Beach or temple

The sand is a short walk from the gate. For Jagannath Temple, about three kilometres away, ask the travel desk for a car.

  4. 14:00

    Shade

The sun swings round; the room cools and the sea turns hard blue. Good hour for a nap or a book.

  5. 17:00

    Second beach walk

The crowd thins and the light softens. This is the walk to take if you only take one.

  6. 18:30

    Sundowner

The terrace cafe above the water, for the afterglow and something cold. See Sundowner Cafe.
