Along the Puri–Konark Marine Drive · Nature

Balukhand is a natural reserve situated along the Puri–Konark marine drive, covering approximately 87 sq. km. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including spotted deer, Indian pangolin, jungle cat, wild boar, and several species of birds. It also hosts rare and endangered plant species, including Casuarina, Sal, and Eucalyptus. The landscape mixes pristine beaches, dunes and lagoons — and because it straddles the road to Konark, most guests pass through it without realising it is a protected sanctuary.

Visiting sensibly

  • Early morning or late afternoon give the best light and the best chance of spotting deer at the forest edge.
  • There are trekking and nature trails; check locally which sections are open, as access rules vary.
  • Stay on the tracks, keep noise down, and never feed wildlife.
  • Combine naturally with a Konark run — the sanctuary lines the whole route.

A compact morning — drive the Marine Drive at dawn, stop at the sanctuary edges, then continue to Konark before the heat. The 3-day itinerary sequences it exactly this way.

Visiting

What to expect on the ground

This is a coastal forest belt rather than a fenced park. You are driving the Puri–Konark road through casuarina and dunes, stopping where there is wildlife to see and shade to stand in.

Go early or late

Animals are more active and the light is better. Midday is hot and quiet.

Keep the car slow

Deer cross the road here. It is also the way to actually see anything.

Do not feed or approach

Wild animals on a busy road are already at risk. Keep your distance and your food to yourself.

Take binoculars

Most of what there is to see is in the trees rather than on the ground.

Best as part of the Konark run. The sanctuary lies along the route to Konark, so treating it as a slow section of that drive rather than a separate excursion makes better use of the day.
