Puri faces east
The sun rises out of the sea here. Sunsets happen behind the town, over the rooftops and the lighthouse.
Puri faces east. That single fact ruins the plans of half the people who arrive expecting a sunset over the sea — so here is where the light actually goes.
First, the geography
The Bay of Bengal is east of the town. Anything on the east coast faces the sunrise, which is why Puri mornings are extraordinary and Puri evenings over the water are not a thing. If you stand on the beach at 6pm expecting the sun to drop into the sea, you will be waiting in the wrong direction.
What you get instead is arguably better: the sun goes down behind you, over the lagoon, the fields and the river mouths inland — and the sea itself turns a colour it never quite manages at dawn. The trick is knowing where to stand.
The consolation prize. Our west-facing terrace at Sundowner catches the afterglow over the water. You will not see the sun set from there, but you will see the sky do everything else.
Four places that face the right way
The least effort, and honestly the best value. Sundowner sits above the water; you will not see the disc drop, but you will see the entire sky reorganise itself over the Bay of Bengal. Order something cold and stay for the afterglow.
0 km No travel needed
Ten to fifteen minutes by auto from the hotel, the town gives way to fields and the edges of the lagoon system. Anywhere you can find open water to the west works; ask a driver for a spot facing the lagoon and they will know one.
10–15 min Auto-rickshaw
Drive south along the coast toward Chandrabhaga Beach and the shoreline bends enough that the sea itself catches the last light. It is the closest thing to a sunset over water in the district, and the drive back in the dark is straightforward.
Toward Konark Plan for the drive home
Head toward Chilika and you cross the river mouths that feed the lagoon. Wide water, low horizon, almost nobody there. Best done as the return leg of a day trip rather than a dedicated evening run.

Timing it right
Sunset time shifts by a little over an hour across the year, so work backwards from the actual time rather than from the clock.
If you are staying on the terrace, this is when to claim a good table. If you are driving south, this is when to be in the car.
The light that makes photographs worth keeping. Warm, low and directional — this is the window that matters more than the moment of setting.
Brief, and over faster than people expect on the coast near the equator. Have the camera ready before it starts, not after.
Frequently the most beautiful part. Most people leave during this and miss it.
Back at the hotel, or at Sundowner if you have not eaten. The kitchen keeps its usual hours.
The east-coast light is harsh and the humidity softens everything slightly. Three things reliably improve results:
Read this before you go

Our Sundowner terrace catches the colour twice — the morning rise over the water and the evening glow reflected back off the town.
The coast bends at Konark, and Chandrabhaga beach is where the day actually ends over the Bay of Bengal.
