Temple at first light
Before six the temple town is calm and the light is low and warm. It is the best hour of the day.
Couples
Puri is not a honeymoon resort and we will not pretend otherwise. It is a working temple town on a real coastline, and for the right couple that is better.
In detail
There is a category of hotel marketing that sells a honeymoon as a private world: a pool, a spa, a beach with nobody else on it, and a room service that never intrudes. Puri is not that, and a couple who book expecting it will be disappointed.
What Puri is: an extraordinary coastline to the west, a temple that people cross the world to see, a town that smells of sand and incense, and hotels on the beach road where you can watch the sun go down over the water from a balcony. For a couple who want a few nights that feel different from ordinary, that is genuinely enough.
For a honeymoon the decision is the view and the balcony, in that order. Three categories have a private balcony. Of those, the Platinum Double is front sea-facing at 217 sq. ft. — the smallest room with the best view, which for two people on a short trip is the right trade.
If you want space rather than a balcony, the Suite is 355 sq. ft. with a king bed, a lounge area and a side sea view. It is the most spacious room for two on the property.
The temple at dawn, which is at its calmest before six. The beach in the early morning and after four. The Sundowner Cafe on the sea-facing terrace at golden hour. And Konark, 35 km along the coast, which produces better photographs than any beach scene.
There is no swimming pool and no spa. The sea here has powerful surf, real undertow and steep drop-offs close to shore, and it is not a safe or private alternative to a pool. If a pool is central to what you have in mind, book somewhere that has one, and this is not it.
Say it is an occasion. A honeymoon or an anniversary changes what the hotel can arrange. Mention it when you call on +91 33 4002 1200 and the reservations desk will tell you plainly what is possible.
What to know
Before six the temple town is calm and the light is low and warm. It is the best hour of the day.
The sea is calmest early. Check conditions, and treat the water with real respect.
The multi-cuisine restaurant is on site; the town food is a short taxi away and worth the trip.
The Sundowner Cafe faces the sea. This is where the day should slow down.
35 km along the coast. A full day, and the best photographs of the trip.
The commonest mistake is over-scheduling. One unplanned day makes the others better.

Step by step
Three categories have one. Say which room you want rather than asking for "a good room".
Day one is for settling. Beach at sunset, dinner, early night.
The calmest and most rewarding hour. Full-length clothing, no leather.
Konark or a slow beach day. Not both in two nights.
For the balcony, the sea, and absolutely no plan.
It changes what the desk can arrange for you.
It is a good place for a couple who want a coastline, a temple and quiet evenings. It is not a resort, and there is no pool or spa here. It suits couples who want a few nights that feel different, not couples chasing a spa.
The Platinum Double: 217 sq. ft., front sea-facing, with a private balcony. If you want space instead, the Suite is 355 sq. ft. with a king bed and a lounge, with a side sea view.
Tell the reservations desk when you call. The banquet hall handles small celebrations, and the desk will tell you plainly what can be arranged inside the property.
No. There is no swimming pool at Hotel Sonar Bangla, and the sea here is powerful rather than gentle.
