Hotels near the Puri Lighthouse and Narendra Tank

Most Puri Beach hotels face south towards the temple town crowds. The northern stretch past Narendra Tank is quieter, wider and closer to where we are.

In detail

The two ends of Puri Beach are not the same beach

Puri Beach runs for several kilometres, and the difference between its southern end near the temple town and its northern end past Narendra Tank is large enough to change a trip. Photos rarely convey it, because almost every photograph of Puri Beach is taken in the busier half.

What the northern stretch is like

Heading north from the town you pass the lighthouse and then Narendra Tank, a working fishing harbour where boats are worked and repaired on the beach itself. Beyond that the coast opens out: the sand is broader, the water is often cleaner, and in the evening there is a fraction of the crowd that fills the beach opposite the town.

Hotel Sonar Bangla is at Baliapanda, in this northern half. Guests reach the sand from the property without crossing the beach road, and the northern stretch is what they walk onto.

What you give up

Honesty requires the other side of it. The southern beach is closer to the market, the temple and the busier restaurants. At night it has more going on, in the sense that more people are on it. If you want to walk to dinner in the town each evening, the north end costs you a short ride.

Who the north end suits

Couples who want quiet, families with young children who need the beach to be manageable, and anyone who has been to Puri before and found the town beach too crowded. It suits them less well if the plan is mostly the temple, market and town food.

Booking a car for the evening. If you base yourself here, ask the travel desk to arrange a driver for the temple town and market in the evening rather than walking it. It is a short ride and it removes the only real downside of this location.

What to know

North beach versus town beach

Crowds

The northern stretch is markedly quieter, particularly after four in the afternoon.

Sand and width

Broader sand and more room to walk, away from the fishing boats at Narendra Tank.

Access to the temple

About 3 km. A short ride rather than a walk.

Evening dining

In-house and on the terrace, or a short ride to the town restaurants.

Sunset

Over the water. The coast faces west, so the light goes down in front of you.

Fishing boats

Narendra Tank is a working harbour. It is genuinely interesting, and it is not a swimming spot.

Step by step

Getting the best out of the north end

Walk the beach at seven

Before nine the northern sand is empty and the light is at its best.

Book the balcony room

The front sea-facing categories look straight down the beach.

Arrange an evening car

Ask the travel desk in advance rather than negotiating autos at dusk.

Do the temple early

Leave before six. It is calmer and you are back before the beach fills.

Eat in one evening

The terrace and the restaurant are on site, which saves a return trip.

Do not expect a night market

The southern end has more going on. Choose deliberately, not by accident.
