A weekend in Puri: the two-night version, done properly
Forty-eight hours is enough for Puri if you plan it. It is also enough to waste completely if you do not. Here is the version that works.

The detail
How to actually spend 48 hours
The commonest mistake with a short Puri trip is treating it as a full trip compressed. Puri rewards one big thing and one slow thing, not four attractions. The plan below does the temple properly on the first morning and leaves the rest deliberately unhurried.
Friday evening: arrive, eat, sunset
Get in, drop bags, and do nothing ambitious. The beach is a few steps away and the light is the best it will be all weekend. Dinner in-house or in the town, and an early night — you are going to want to be awake before six.
Saturday morning: the temple
Leave before six. This is the single most valuable hour of a weekend in Puri: the temple town is calm, the light is low and warm, and you will not be negotiating space with a crowd. Allow two hours properly, not one. Our temple guide covers etiquette.
Saturday: the choice
You have two options and only one of them is right for a weekend. Either Konark — 35 km along the coast, a full morning and a good story — or a slow beach day with the town around it. Do not try Konark and Chilika in one weekend; you will spend the whole time in a vehicle.
Saturday evening: the sea
Sunset is over the water here. Eat early, watch it from the beach or a balcony, and then walk. The northern stretches are quieter than the sand opposite the town.
Sunday morning: swim, then leave
One last swim if the sea is behaving, breakfast, and then out. Check your train or flight timings before you travel, not at the station.
Book transport before you book rooms. From Kolkata the overnight trains are the main constraint, and they sell out. From Bhubaneswar, arrange a pickup in advance rather than assuming a car will be waiting. Get that right and the rest of the weekend takes care of itself.
The one big thing
Saturday: pick one
| Konark day trip | Slow beach day | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 35 km along the coast | Steps from the hotel |
| Takes | Most of the day | An hour |
| You see | The Sun Temple | The sea and the town |
| Transport needed | Yes — arrange a car | None |
| Best for | First visit | A second visit |
